Desert Harvest History: No Place for a Woman3F
National Pioneer Women's Hall of Fame, Alice Springs (NT)Commemorating the role of women in food production in Central Australia. ‘Primary Industry’ in Central Australia has taken many forms over the years – from wild food harvest, homestead and market gardening and farming for family sustenance to large commercial grazing and horticulture businesses. Traditional Aboriginal lifestyles relied on use of the land in its entirety for survival; and the predominant land-use in Central Australia continues to be large tracts given over to grazing. Adaptations to the desert environment in the form of niche horticulture crops and business enterprises that partner food production are also growing in number and importance. Lifestyles of all Central Australians, Aboriginal and more recent settlers, have changed over the years. The desert harvest stories depicted in this display reflect this in the way the characters, settings and creative enterprises have varied over time. However the end results have a common thread – country once viewed as ‘the dead heart of Australia’ has given generously in the form of a relatively bountiful ‘desert harvest’. 0A

Australian War Memorial: Reading Room * note after hours entry through side door. The Reading Room is closed to the public after 5:00 pm. Therefore you will need to enter through the side door where security is, behind the HMAS Brisbane gun and turret. There is a map on the Memorial’s site www.awm.gov.au 0A (ACT)The Second World War was a pivotal era in the history of Australian women as an emerging labour force. The history of the Australian Women’s Land Army (AWLA) forms a significant part of that story. In 1946 it was considered important to national posterity to permanently archive the records of the Australian Women’s Land Army including the personal service records. Many of these historic records are now held in the National Archives of Australia or the Australian War Memorial. The personal service records for all States except NSW did not survive. This presentation will outline the historical and archival background to the disappearance of these personal service records and discuss recent research into attempting to track their location after the war.
